Lauded as a ‘mezzo-soprano of conscious’, Chrystal E. Williams uses her vocal platform to unabashedly break stereotypes, be a voice for the voiceless, as well as foster unity and peace through music. Her ingenuity and gifts have been acknowledged by numerous organizations; including the Classical Post (Classical Post Awards Most Innovative Singer 2019), the Musical Fund Society (Career Grant Award 2020), International Opera Awards 2020 (Young Singer Nominee), to name a few. 

 Recent past season’s engagements included Yardbird with Arizona Opera and Atlanta Opera; a return to Birmingham Opera Company UK in 2019 as Katerina in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk; Intimate Apparel by R.I. Gordon in a workshop with The Metropolitan Opera and Lincoln Center Theater; and, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Chrystal E. Williams made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Maketaten in Glass’ Akhnaten last season; was the Stewardess in FLIGHT in a debut with Minnesota Opera; debuted with Seattle Opera in the role reprisal of Rebecca in Charlie Parker’s YARDBIRD; STAY with On Site Opera (COVID postponement), River of Life tour with Orchestra 2001 (COVID postponed), and Bernstein’s Songfest with Seattle Symphony (COVID cancellation). In the 2020-21 season she is Miss Jessel, Turn of the Screw (COVID postponed); debuts the eponymous role of Carmen with Opera North (UK, COVID postponed); and is Fricka in Das Rheingold with Birmingham Opera Company (UK). This season also brings a collaboration with co-creator Brazilian accordionist Felipe Hostins as they launch “Forrópera” in partnership with Astral Artists and Esperanza Arts Center, melding together the Brazilian tradition of Forró with Opera. It is set to premiere May 2021. 

 The Chrystal E. Williams Scholarship was founded by the artist in 2004 to help students wishing to pursue a career in the Performing Arts. This scholarship is funded in part by her concert, An Evening with Chrystal E., held annually during the month of June in Norfolk, VA. Chrystal E. Williams holds degrees from the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, PA, Yale University and Carnegie Mellon University.
