Dr. King, hailing from the beautiful islands of Jamaica and Cuba, earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Oakwood University in Huntsville, AL. She then completed her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Illinois at Chicago at 26, one of the youngest and first Afro-Latina to receive this degree in their 147-year history. Her scientific work was primarily focused on understanding biological mechanisms responsible for autism and depression. She spent most of her days working with human blood samples reviewing the neurotransmitter serotonin’s role in both conditions.
Despite her early accomplishments and growing expertise as a brain health expert, Natalie has the energy and passion for giving back to the community through leadership, mentorship, and STEM advocacy. She is an advisory board member of “The Girls for Science” mentorship program and a committee member of Black Girls Do STEM; both organizations empower young girls to learn and pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
She has also been recognized as one of Magic Johnson’s Playbook 32 Under 32 inductees. She has served on other committees and advisory boards for numerous national and international organizations, including UNICEF NextGen, Women in Bio, and Make-A-Wish Illinois.Â
Natalie King, PhD is not your average beauty founder. Dr. King’s background is rooted in Biophysiology and Neuroscience, with experience as both a researcher and healthcare provider. She wanted to create a company that reflected her multifaceted identity, one that combined the scientific rigor of her medical work and her personal hair journey as an Afro-Latina woman with textured hair.
The result was Florae, the haircare brand that has a little of Natalie and is made for all.
Dr. King is also a Medical Science Liaison in Neurology, leading multi-state medical strategy for the central states region and positively impacting the lives of actual patients every day. Her previous work in Medical Affairs has included appointments in Women’s Health and Vascular Medicine, and she is also a double-licensed Emergency Medical Technician. Natalie’s ultimate goal is to continue to pave the way for women and men of all ages to pursue their dreams and achieve optimal brain health and wellness.
